How Our Program Works
The application process is open to Romanian children currently in grades 7 and 8 (who will be between grades 7 and 8, or grades 8 and 9, during their summer in the USA). They must be academically proficient, speak English well, from economically disadvantaged families, and demonstrate emotional and intellectual maturity. Our program is open to eligible children from all areas of Romania. To identify candidates, we work with Romanian partner organizations such as the Brasov-based Aspera Foundation. Candidates may also apply to our program directly.
Typically EERC obtains scholarships for tuition costs associated with the summer program, and conducts a variety of fundraising activities to raise funds for the children's travel costs such as airfare. EERC also carefully identifies host families, who receive no payment under our program.
The selection process consists of a short application, essay questions, teacher recommendations, and a personal interview, ideally conduced in the applicant's home. The number of scholarships available each year varies. In 2009 we offered four; in 2010, six. We typically begin accepting applications in the fall for the following summer. More details are available on the "How to Apply" section of this website.
Questions about this program, and completed applications, should be directed to Program Director Michelle Ciurea (mciurea@eercboston.org) or President Daniela Floru (dfloru@eercboston.org).
Our 2010 program is ongoing now. Read about our 2009 program under "Summer Memories" on this webpage.
