Sorina Bularca, Brasov 2018

Openness is a word I use to describe my EERC experience. Because of the program, I had the opportunity to open up not only my mind to new experiences. I was able to show those around me the best side of myself. The atmosphere without prejudice helped me feel more secure, and made me want to discover more about myself. I was able to get out of my comfort zone in order to allow myself to explore without being afraid to live in the present.

I stayed in a camp called Frank A Day, and let me tell you it was one of the best places I could have been. The spirit of teamwork and friendship the camp embodies are truly unique. I think it is the best place to make memories; a place in which everyone learns about responsibility, respect, honesty and taking care of yourself. Consequently, one of my favorite aspects about the camp was that I was not allowed to use my phone, which reminded me to live in the present and to be happy that I am alongside some outstanding people.

All at once, I opened myself up in front of everyone, which enabled me to be myself, to take risks, and to be brave as it is more important to enjoy the moment than to get caught up in what others might think of me. I learned to believe in myself (fun fact: it was inside of me all along!) and I freely expressed my beliefs and opinions. I tried new things, I lived alongside Americans, I experienced a bit of their lifestyle, and I saw what sports they like and what they eat from day to day. Their curiosity in learning about the history, traditions, customs, and great things about Romania truly impressed me.

I can say that EERC taught me to aim high and not be afraid of failure, to have an open mind towards everything around me, and to never miss an opportunity to tell those around me how much I appreciate them and to thank them for what they do, because one day they might be an ocean away.
